It combines driving and manslaughter in such a way that could be disturbing if it wasn't so completely exaggerated and cartoon-y. But we're talking about games, not psychology. The structure of Carmageddon is like most arcade race games - run a race, get money and upgrade your car. Each race features six cars. There is a timer that counts down; when it hits zero, the race is over.
Unlike most race games, the way you increase the timer is not by reaching different stages, but instead by damaging other cars, or more often than not, running over pedestrians. If the thought of killing people makes you squeamish, pretend the guys in suits are your ex-boss, the men or women in bathing suits are Calvin Klein models, the punker dudes are whiny Gen-X'ers, and perhaps most gratifying of all, the guys in white suits are those dancing idiots in the Intel MMX commercials.
Play that funky music, disemboweled boy. There are three different ways to win a race: you can win it outright, by completing X number of laps; or by destroying all of your opponents; or killing every pedestrian in the environment the latter is unlikely, considering there can be more than in a race. For particularly inspiring deaths, you may be awarded bonuses for "extra style" or "artistic impression.
Violence aside, racing games are all about physics, and Carmageddon has a perfect driving "feel. Each car has a completely different feel, with the small cars having tight turning radii and good handling, while the big, heavy cars turn slowly and tend to oversteer at the merest hint of a turn. As good as the car models are, it's the gameworld that really shines.
The environment for each race is enormous and free-form. You can drive anywhere, with few limits if you want to finish a race, you might want to stay on the marked portions of the track ; and where most racing games are content with tracks, Carmageddon gives you a remarkably generous 36 tracks.
Astute drivers will recognize some of the environments as being duplicates, though the actual routes through the areas are different. If you like Destruction Derby , you ain't seen nothing until you've seen Carmageddon.
Dynamic visible damage and the most amazing high-speed accidents make for a racing experience that is unlike anything ever seen on the PC. No game is perfect, and Carmageddon has a lot of flaws that can be considered fairly serious depending on the gamer. The game ships with both a DOS and Windows 95 version, and the latter version is a bit on the sluggish side an understatement - it basically sucks. A high-resolution mode is only available with the DOS version, and can only be accessed via a command-line switch Finally, purveyors of perfect 3D, the ones who'd rather talk about draw-in and such than play a game, will find a lot to complain about.
Overall, though, the gameplay wins out, even in low-resolution VGA mode some of us don't necessarily view this as a detriment. Lesser games would have been content with playing up the killing angle and ignoring the gameplay see the upcoming game Postal , but the makers of Carmageddon have instead fashioned a brilliantly over-the-top racing game, one that would have been well-received even without the violence.
A number of flaws that have nothing to do with its violent content keep it from receiving a higher score, but if you enjoy arcade racing games, Carmageddon is one of, if not the, best on the market. It always turned into destruction derby and "kill the pedestrians". If you did try to follow the race courses, some were just insane, having to jump rooftop to rooftop or other craziness. So, even then, it was often just more productive to wipe out the competitors then try to race them.

It still managed to sell about 2 million copies upon its release. It did so well it managed to spawn a series containing 2 more games. Carmageddon is not for those who are easily offended or put off by gore.
With its ridiculously violent and gory gameplay, and easy control scheme, Carmageddon is just an entertaining thrill ride. This was signed by SCi in , but under the condition that it be made into a licensed game in order to guarantee popularity. Initially, SCi wanted to use the Mad Max license, but they were unable to find out who owned the rights to the franchise. They instead secured the Death Race license, as a sequel to the original film was at that time planned.
According to head programmer Patrick Buckland, the initial concept stemmed from the team getting bored while playing racing games, leading them to ultimately drive in the wrong direction and crash into other cars. They decided it made sense to create a game where this was the objective to begin with.
Shortly after, Psygnosis released a game with this same concept, Destruction Derby. The notion of running over pedestrians was added in an effort to distinguish the game from Destruction Derby and arouse controversy. However, there had been a number of recent games which involved running over pedestrians, such as Quarantine and Die Hard Trilogy.

It is an excellent catharsis, and I greatly recommend it. My only beef is with the third level of play.
I can beat the first two levels but the time limits on the third level are too short to really have any fun. Other than that you will surely enjoy many hours of gory delight. Carmageddon is perhaps the closest game to the ones the anti-violence groups decry.
To say that it has questionable content is a gross understatement. There is blood, gore, and you get points for squashing people with your car. The language is vulgar and caustic. If you play this game to "blow off your steam" and you imagine your boss, or professor in place of one of the poor victims, I hope you don't live too close to me. However, if you play this game for the fun factor of high-risk driving rather than murderous instincts, you will discover a very potent racing game.
The cars, parts, and other options are numerous and the objectives require great precision and accuracy. Try this game out if there is no one around who may be offended by the profanity your computer will spew into the air.
Hands down the best driving game ever and by far, to this day, still the most entertaining game to play period. In fact, I seriously do not know how once you've played it, you could EVER play any of these crap driving sim games that feel like your car is made out of paper and steers like a baby carriage [an unfortunate problem with CARMA 2]. Just the feel of the cars is worth it, but beyond that, there's so much more -- wild powerups; earning the right to drive the cars you face; demolishing cops; and the pedestrian count is what warms a true gamer's heart after a stiff bout of road rage.
To say that Carmageddon is fast paced is an understatement. It moves quickly and requires a fairly steep learning curve. If you plan to race in this game, plan to spend some time learning the proper joystick moves. I had hoped upon purchasing this game to have a whimsical if somewhat twisted view of the raod racing sims.
However, I was shocked to find that the language maintained in the format was so strong as to be offensive to all but the most jaded among us. If you think that foul language is a necessary part of gaming, then this program might be right up your alley.
If, however, you don't enjoy the air turning blue from all the non-deleted expletives rather than the exhaust fumes from your storming machine, better look elsewhere for your gaming fun. Tired of crashing the same way every time? Tired of being curbed when you try to run off the assigned track? Tired of running an unwinnable race against computer cars that can't be beat or beaten? WHy is it so good, you ask? Physics Physics Physics, you crash determined by how you hit things, you MUST turn into that skid to regain control, blood makes your wheels slick, and yes, that light post can be brought down, but not without some work. Don't want to run the race?
The end of other games will come to anyone who plays this over a network. Sticking it to the computer is one thing, sticking it to another real player? Carmageddon will make you a better driver.
